You should also wash your lint screen in the diswasher periodically. If you can avoid softener sheets you should, because they cause build-up in the screen, preventing flow and collection. I use a loose ball of tin foil instead of softener sheets to keep static away.

I have a cousin who had a dryer fire, luckily they were home and smelled smoke and was able to stop it before it became major. Learned a major lesson then too about cleaning the vent. Also want to add, don't got to bed or leave home with the dryer going. That is what they were about to do, can you imagine!
This is something I always did too.

We do not recommend using the foil duct as it can be easily crushed, tear or restrict air-flow. Sometimes, depending on the installation, it is necessary to use it in order to get the dryer to fit. We’d recommend that you take extra care to make sure it is not blocked, crushed or restricting the air flow and check for tears and clean it regularly.

I just looked and my dryer has that aluminum foil looking duct you say don't use. Why do they sell something you say shouldn't be used?

Thom, that is a great question. There are many factors that would need to be determined before that question could be answered. I would consult your local appliance store and maybe your contractor. Rigid duct is smooth and may do a better job at preventing lint build-up. However, it may also be more difficult to access for cleaning purposes and, as you pointed out, would be more costly. The best thing to do would be to have an expert come out and look at your specific application. Thank you again for your comment!

Thanks for this easy to use guide. Cleaning out the dryer ducts has been on the back of my mind since we purchased our home and it came with an old washer and dryer. Who knows how long it's been since the duct work was cleaned? Thanks to your guide, I will attempt to clean it out for my first time!
